In the gospel today, the angel told the shepherds that the birth of Jesus brings great joy to all people. The question is “what is this great joy?” It is the joy that we now have Emmanuel which means “God is with us”. And when God is in our midst, it means that we live with our saviour and our salvation.
I will tell you a story. I worked in a village where there was no hospital nor medical provision. If any of the members of the community got sick, we had to take him/her to the nearby town where there was a hospital, about 50 minutes’ drive from the town. So one day, there was an accident and one of the victims hit his head on the ground and the brain broke open.
Before we could reach the hospital, the young boy was dead. And things like this used to happen. After series of requests and interventions, a health care unit was built in this village. This was for the whole community, a great miracle from God. They do not need to travel distance as to receive medical attention because they now have one. The community now gives everything they have as to see that the health care remains active and functional.
My dear ones, this is the great joy which the birth of Christ brings to us. God is no more very far from us. We do not need to travel to heaven or post him a letter or send him an email. He is now with us. He is Emmanuel, Wonderful-Counsellor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Secondly, the birth of Jesus dispels the darkness of our lives and makes us not to be afraid anymore. The shepherds were in the darkness of the night. But at the birth of Christ, the glory of God shone around them, dispelling the darkness of the night. Our darkness and our fears have been conquered by the presence of God.
I remember when I was a small boy. I never allowed myself to be alone in the darkness. When night approached, I would be very uncomfortable. I was not sleeping alone. One night, there was no light in the room where I was sleeping, and by chance, I woke up. Thinking that I was alone, I started shouting. But immediately, my dad called me, held me and said to me “Do not be afraid. I am here with you”. Knowing that my dad was lying with me, my whole fears disappeared, and I continued to enjoy my sleep.
This is what we celebrate today, dear friends. The presence of Christ in our lives should give us the courage to live without fear; to be courageous in living as God’s children.
The great joy which the birth of Christ brings is the one that makes us to remember always that God is with us. His glory locates us everywhere we are. It is not a joy for just one set of people, it is a joy for everybody, for the whole world. May we allow ourselves to always feel this presence of God in our midst. Amen

Im heutigen Evangelium sagt der Engel den Hirten, dass die Geburt Jesu allen Menschen große Freude bringt. Die Frage ist: „Was ist diese große Freude?“ Es ist die Freude, dass wir jetzt Emmanuel haben. Das bedeutet „Gott ist mit uns“. Und wenn Gott in unserer Mitte ist, bedeutet das, dass wir mit unserem Erlöser und unserer Erlösung leben. Ich habe eine Geschichte für euch. Ich arbeitete in einem Dorf, in dem es weder Krankenhaus noch medizinische Versorgung gab. Wenn eines der Mitglieder der Gemeinschaft krank wurde, mussten wir ihn/sie in die nahe gelegene Stadt bringen, wo es ein Krankenhaus gab, etwa 50 Autominuten von der Stadt entfernt. Eines Tages gab es einen Unfall und eines der Opfer schlug mit dem Kopf auf den Boden und das Gehirn brach auf. Bevor wir das Krankenhaus erreichen konnten, war der Junge tot. Und solche Dinge passierten früher. Nach einer Reihe von Anfragen und Interventionen wurde in diesem Dorf eine Gesundheitsstation gebaut. Dies war für die ganze Gemeinde ein großes Wunder von Gott. Sie müssen nicht weit reisen, um medizinische Hilfe zu erhalten, weil sie jetzt eine haben. Die Gemeinde setzt nun alles daran, dass das Gesundheitswesen aktiv und funktionsfähig bleibt.
Meine Lieben, das ist die große Freude, die uns die Geburt Christi bringt. Gott ist uns nicht mehr sehr fern. Wir müssen nicht in den Himmel reisen oder ihm einen Brief schicken oder ihm eine E-Mail schicken. Er ist jetzt bei uns. Er ist Emmanuel, Wunderbarer Ratgeber, Mächtiger Gott, Ewiger Vater, Friedensfürst.
Zweitens vertreibt die Geburt Jesu die Dunkelheit unseres Lebens und lässt uns keine Angst mehr haben. Die Hirten waren in der Dunkelheit der Nacht. Aber bei der Geburt Christi umstrahlte sie die Herrlichkeit Gottes und vertrieb die Dunkelheit der Nacht. Unsere Dunkelheit und unsere Ängste wurden durch die Gegenwart Gottes besiegt. Ich erinnere mich, als ich ein kleiner Junge war. Ich habe mir nie erlaubt, allein in der Dunkelheit zu sein. Wenn die Nacht nahte, würde ich mich sehr unwohl fühlen. Ich habe nicht alleine geschlafen. Eines Nachts gab es kein Licht in dem Zimmer, in dem ich schlief, und durch Zufall wachte ich auf. Da ich dachte, ich sei allein, fing ich an zu schreien. Aber sofort rief mich mein Vater an, hielt mich fest und sagte zu mir: „Hab keine Angst. Ich bin hier mit dir, Mein Sohn”. Als ich wusste, dass mein Vater bei mir lag, verschwanden meine Ängste und ich genoss weiterhin meinen Schlaf.
Das feiern wir heute, liebe Freunde. Die Gegenwart Christi in unserem Leben sollte uns den Mut geben, ohne Angst zu leben; mutig sein, als Kinder Gottes zu leben.
Die große Freude, die die Geburt Christi mit sich bringt, lässt uns immer daran denken, dass Gott mit uns ist. Seine Herrlichkeit lokalisiert uns, wo immer wir sind. Es ist nicht nur eine Freude für eine Gruppe von Menschen, es ist eine Freude für alle, für die ganze Welt. Mögen wir uns erlauben, diese Gegenwart Gottes immer in unserer Mitte zu spüren. Amen
